Work Rights and Stay back Policies

  • Students from countries outside of the EU/EEA zone ( third countries) can reside for a further 12 months in Austria to search for employment or start a business after the expiry of their student visa.
  • International students can apply for a post-study work visa of up to 12-24 months to search for a job.
  • Students can work 20 hours per week. Typically, part-time earning is 9 ‐ 12 EUR per hour.
  • They should apply for a confirmation by the competent residence authority (MA 35) before the expiry of their student visa.
  • After successfully finding a job, international students can apply for an Austrian work visa, generally called a Red-White-Red Card.
  • R-W-R card will allow you to settle for 24 months in Austria and work for the employer specified in your application.
  • The main requirements here is to find employment matching your qualification and prove a minimum salary of 2,349 EUR per month.

Cost of Study in Austria

In Austria, Private academic institutions are more expensive. Tuition costs vary between 3,000 – 23,000 EUR/year according to the study program you choose.

In larger cities like Vienna and Salzburg, the cost of living can be 900 – 1,300 EUR/month, which covers expenses like accommodation, food, social activities, and public transportation.

Test Requirement

IELTS is not mandatory for many academic programs and universities, but there can be exceptions. Generally, the minimum requirement is as follows: 

  • IELTS minimum score of 6.5
  • TOEFL minimum score of 81 (internet-based test)
  • SAT minimum score of 500 on the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing Portion of SAT exam
  • Cambridge English Exam - Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) minimum score of 176, CEFR level
