Work Rights and Stay Back Policies

There are two types of employment available to F‐1 students (Students who are legally in U.S. and have benefits and restrictions specified in the immigration regulations for the F-1 visa category)
  • On-Campus Employment
  • Curriculum Practical Training (CPT)
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT)
  • Off-Campus Employment

On–Campus Employment:

  • During study time- 20 hrs./week on campus
  • During Holidays - 40 hrs./week off campus

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

  • Gets actual employment experience
  • CPT can be full-time (more than 20 hours a week) or part-time (20 hours or less/ week).
  • Eligibility- the student must have completed 9 months in lawful status and currently be on F‐1 status.

Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  • Available to students who are lawfully enrolled on a full–time basis &have completed at least 1 full academic year.
  • Eligible students may request OPT to be employed in a position related to their major area of study.
  • 12/36 months of OPT available after each degree level completion

Cost of Study in USA

  • Average tuition fees per year range from $15,000 to $25,000 for private institutions and $10,000 to $20,000 for state owned institutions.
  • The cost of living in US can vary according to where you live. Even though it is $10,000-$16,000 per year approximately.

Test Requirements

  • IELTS and TOEFL scores as proof of English language skills for admission to any course.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) – For entry into Graduate Programs.
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for admission to MBA and other management programs.
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is required for admission into bachelor-level courses.
  • Law and Medical schools usually require different exams like LSAT and MCAT.
